African Party is the latest installment in the Putumayo journey. In 1991, founder Dan Storper was strolling through Golden Gate Park when he was transfixed by the uplifting sounds of the African group Kotoja. This experience inspired Dan to launch Putumayo World Music as a platform to introduce people to the joyous international sounds that moved him on that day. “I’ll never forget the moment when I came across people of all ages and backgrounds dancing to this exciting African band. Their music was the essence of what has become the Putumayo World Music slogan ‘guaranteed to make you feel good.’ It’s exciting that we’re now celebrating 15 years in existence, 15 offices opened around the world and more than 20 million CDs sold. I couldn’t imagine a more appropriate CD than African Party as a celebration of the music that inspired me to start the company.”

It's rare to find a remix album that really works, but this does. Four Balkan gypsy groups reworked in any number of ways might sound limiting, but the studio wizards here have managed to retain the spirit of the original tracks while taking them in very eclectic directions. From the work of Arto Lindsay and Melvin Gibbs on "Mugur Mugurel," which recalls the adventurous no wave era of downtown New York, to the glory of Lightning Head's "L'Orient Est Rouge," where African soukous and house music mix gloriously with the original, this is a delight. Turkey's Mercan Dede brings his hypnotic sensibilities to "Siki, Siki Baba," while Olaf Hund's "Are You Gypsified?" medley is nothing less than mad, creating a jam session among three of the bands that veers with loving drunkenness all over the road.

For more than five years, the band ASURA has polished a personal electronic universe sound, between trance psychedelic, Ambient and World music.
Made by many influences, their music does not remain about it less one personal and considered creation, centered on the perpetual search of infinite spaces and multiple origins. Monotonous melancholic lyrics, symphonic waves, fast and slow rhythms, heavy or throbbing, liturgical songs, the band ASURA introduces a certain solemn vision of the world. Built around electronic machines and acoustic instruments, their music is a curiosity. Recognized everywhere, little known in France, their title " Mother Gaïa " however had many dance at the time of large Trance raves in Israel, Germany and Australia. Vincent Villuis left the band to concentrate on his new project : Aes Dana and was replaced by Alex Ackerman.
